It's not easy being a girly boy growing up in rural Australia in the 1980s, particularly for fourteen year old Bax. Bax's mum sends him on errands that are highly inappropriate for a teenage boy and his nanna is a certified lunatic. Things are not made any easier for him by the fact that everyone in the neighbourhood thinks that he's a freak because he looks a lot like a girl. But, then again, there is an upside: it is the Eighties and a whole bunch of "gender-benders" are topping the music charts. That makes Bax feel he might be a lot cooler than everyone else thinks, but it's not enough for him to feel that he's not all alone. What Bax really wants is a friend, someone who will like him for who he is and not treat him like a weirdo. That day comes sooner for Bax than he expects, but brings with it a need to face facts about who he really is, and who he wants to be.

Spinning & Singing is a novella set in Toowoomba, Queensland, in the 1980s. It is semi-autobiographical, often funny and always heart-warming.
