Academic Writing

I publish academic writing under the name "Dallas J. Baker". Some of my academic work can be found by clicking on the titles below.

Return of the Eunuch: Gender Disobedience as a Path to Awakening in Buddhist Tantra (2008) is an academic paper that discusses how gender non-conformity can be viewed as a pathway to spiritual awakening in some forms of Buddhism. It points out the many confluences between Buddhist Philosophy and Queer Theory. It's in Postscripts: The Journal of Sacred Texts and Contemporary Worlds. You may need university library acces to read the full paper.

Monstrous Fairytales: Towards an Ecriture Queer (2010) is  about the queering of fairy stories and is in Colloquy: Text Theory Critique.

Inscribing the Queer (2011) is a review essay and is in TEXT Journal.

Queering Practice-Led Research: Subjectivity, Creative Practice and Performative Research (2011) is published as part of the Cultural Studies Association of Australasia Conference Proceedings and describes a form of creative arts research informed by Queer Theory.

Queering Practice-Led Research: Subjectivity, Performative Research & the Creative Arts (2011) is a much longer version of the paper above with a specific focus on creative industries and Gay & Lesbian writing and publishing. It's in Creative Industries Journal 4(1). You may need university library access to read the full paper.

Creative and Critical Refelxivity: Queer Writing as an Ethics of the Self (2011) is a paper about creative writing as a Foucauldian ethics of the self. It is published as part of the refereed proceedings of the 2011 Australasian Association of Writing Programs conference.

Creative Writing Praxis as Queer Becoming (2013) examines how writing practice and engagement with textual artefacts (literature) can trigger an ongoing queer "becoming". In other words, it explores how queer subjects are constituted by the processes and practices of reading and writing. It's in New Writing: The International Journal for the Practice and Theory of Creative Writing. You may need university library access to read the full paper.

Scriptwriting as Creative Writing Research (2013) argues that scripts should be published and studied irrespective of whether or not they have been produced. It also argues that the study of scriptwriting may be better situated in Creative Writing departments rather than Film & TV departments. It's in TEXT journal.

Scriptwriting as a research practice: expanding the field (2015, with Batty, Beattie & Davis) builds on the argument that scripts should be published and studied irrespective of whether or not they have been produced. I co-authored it with some very cool folks. It's in TEXT journal.

Writing and Reading Queerly: Foucault’s Aesthetics of Existence and Queer Self-making (2015) was published in Beyond Australia Queer, a special issue of TEXT.

Queer Writing: Setting the Scene (2015, with J. D. Thompson) was published in Beyond Australia Queer, a special issue of TEXT.

The Screenplay as Text: Academic Scriptwriting as Creative Research (2016) was published in New Writing: The International Journal for the Practice and Theory of Creative Writing.
